A limited-copy run of a handmade photo zine that I’m proud to have shared in is available for five bucks at King Street Books & Sundries in downtown Cobourg, ON. A sweet, pocket-sized exhibition of community art.
for the love of colle:
the collected works of
the cobourg collage party 2011
a cadre of creatives that
converge to collage
each new year’s eve
are indebted to their kindergarten teachers
for introducing them to the joy of scissors
(and to the danger of running with them)
and to the French for the word colle
which means “to glue”
this annual gathering of brave souls
hold in common
a love of communal artmaking
and a desire to turn one year into another
in the company of good people
good conversation
and good food
Before spending hours assembling ephemera into art, the band of collagers assemble themselves in a wide open space filled with tables, stacks of paperish material, plenty of glue and good music. One collager may arrive with a clear intention in mind, while another finds nourishment and inspiration in the moment. This inspiration might be found in an old magazine, a book of antique advertisements, a quote by e.e. cummings or maybe Rumi, but it burns its brightest when it’s fired by the collective energies of fellow artmakers. Whatever the spark that ignites, collage-making redemptively transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary, opens the remarkable well of creativity that resides in each of us.
